For the past few years, Unregistered Nurse has been working tirelessly to bring good old-fashioned ass-kicking punk and garage rock to Baltimore. If it sounds anything like the Ramones, Unregistered Nurse's Dana Murphy likes it! Dans has been giving peeps in Baltimore & beyond a good education in some great bands that would otherwise have gone under the radar. Not only that, but she does it with a sense of grrrl power, making sure that women aren’t left out of the rock and roll scene.

Life has been a whirl for Girlpool since the release of their acclaimed 2015 debut Before the World Was Big. Shortly before the record came out, Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker relocated from their hometown of Los Angeles all the way across the country to Philadelphia, where they quickly became embedded in the local D.I.Y. scene. "Before BTWWB, I was just out of high school, living in my old neighborhood," recalls Cleo Tucker. "Then we started touring in a way we'd never done before. I really started to experience the duality that was beginning to exist in my life: tour/not on tour." After a chaotic and informative year spent floating around the East Coast, both bandmates moved home to California at the start of 2017. Girlpool have been seemingly everywhere at once, exploring all the world's offerings with open minds and notebooks. All the lessons they learned, about the earth and about themselves, are gathered together in their sophomore record and ANTI- debut, Powerplant.

Over 10 days in August 2016, Girlpool holed up at Los Angeles' Comp-ny studios to record and mix Powerplant with Drew Fischer. For the first time, Harmony and Cleo were joined by a third performer, drummer Miles Wintner, a friend who easily meshed with the tightknit duo. The decision to add percussion came as a natural decision for Harmony and Cleo; "Cleo and I just were driving down the New Jersey turnpike when she mentioned that it might be exciting to expand our sound for the new songs," says Harmony. "The songs we were writing had the potential of getting really climactic," adds Cleo. "I think percussion adds a new part of the musical dynamic that we want to explore."Girlpool's eagerness to evolve should come as no surprise; in the same way that there were little traces of their self-titled EP on BTWWB, on Powerplant, the pair shed their old skins with more eagerness than before. "In some ways I feel more courageous and mature and in other ways I feel smaller and softer, sometimes even more fragile than ever," says Harmony, adding that while the inner self is always changing, ultimately the end is a closer self-truth.

The 12 tracks that compose Powerplant grow and burn with greater fire than the duo have possessed heretofore. Both bandmates were heavily inspired by Elliott Smith, the Cranberries, the Cocteau Twins, Brian Eno, Arthur Russell, and Graham Nash; the influence of each appear in the record's deliberate and intricate guitar work ("Fast Dust," "She Goes By") as well as its embrace of dissonant noise ("Corner Store," "Soup"). Though they were living apart for most of the writing process, the pair still managed to write all but four songs together, another testament to their dedication to Girlpool and each other. Now 21 and 20, Harmony and Cleo confront projections, despondency, apathy, romanticization, love, and heartbreak with a more devastating emotional pragmatism than before. "Looking pretty at the wall is my mistake in love installed/While the moth doesn't talk but in the dress the holes you saw," they sing on opener "123," perfectly refracting the truth. More humorous (but still heavily symbolic) lines are delivered with equal poignancy, like Harmony's disclaimer on "It Gets More Blue," "The nihilist tells you that nothing is true/I said I faked global warming just to get close to you."

When people talk about the beginnings of the music scene in Athens, GA the discussion usually begins “The B-52’s, R.E.M., ….” Those who know will continue the list, “Pylon.” They were every Athens band’s favorite Athens band. Their musical naïveté, southern upbringing, art school smarts, and house-party roots exploded together to create something quite improbably amazing, hitting the listener on mental, physical, and spiritual levels simultaneously. On the surface, their angular guitar parts and propulsive rhythm section had something in common with UK post-punk bands like Gang of Four and PiL. But Pylon was more fun and less studied. And they had a secret weapon in Vanessa Briscoe Hay, whose inimitable vocal textures and phrasing defined the band’s sound for most listeners.
Pylon’s celebrated history came to a sudden end with the death of iconic guitarist Randy Bewley in 2009. Pylon was and always will be Vanessa, Randy, Michael, and Curtis. It is a certainty that the band will not reform with a new guitarist.
But hey, kids. Everything is still cool! Vanessa has gathered members of Athens bands Casper & the Cookies, The Glands, and world renowned pianist Damon Denton to create Pylon Reenactment Society. Is it a cover band if Vanessa is singing? Technically, it’s the next best thing. PRS are here to have fun and perform in the spirit of Pylon. Don’t be discouraged! Let’s dance!

Palm plays rock music backwards. Their songs bear a certain methodology, though there is a tendency towards impulse which seems almost violently opposed to it. The band deals willfully in contradictions like this. The elements of any given song fit together like slightly melted puzzle pieces, serving up rigidity and looseness in equal measure. Palm songs imply architecture, but their compositional structures are somehow bound by different rules of physics than the ones we know. Lattices of guitar language (provided by Eve Alpert and Kasra Kurt) intersect the rhythmic organism characterized by the twitchy throb of Gerasimos Livitsanos' bass and the careless tumble of Hugo Stanley's drums, with a layer of disembodied vocals draped atop the whole thing. Emotional yet clinical, wild yet contained, the sounds they offer are equally bizarre as they are pleasantly pretty.
Palm formed around 2011, shortly after its members met in college in Upstate New York. The years they spent writing and playing when not in school culminated into the release of Trading Basics in 2015, around which time they relocated to Philadelphia. Since then they've been playing shows throughout the country while they continue to hammer out their sound to be as refined as it is outlandish. More to come.

Perhaps its because I've been listening to them near non-stop for so long now that it's all just blurred together, but at the time of my writing this, I can't seem to recall the moment I was first turned on to Baltimore's Wildhoney. Fortunately, everything else about them is immensely memorable. Effortlessly combining wall-of-sound power with delicate passages and gorgeous vocal melodies, Wildhoney simply have a wonderful knack for balancing blasts of distortion and dense textures with beautiful pop tunes and chiming guitar work. So it's with a great deal of elation that I am announcing that we'll be releasing a new EP for the band later this year!

The EP — which the band is currently recording right now — will serve as the follow-up to their debut full length album, Sleep Through It, released earlier this year through Deranged and Forward! Records along with 2014's Photobooth Records effort Seventeen Forever (which is where we initially got hooked on them, and is a great place to start if you've never listened to them before). When pressed to describe the direction of the new material, guitarist Joe Trainor simply states,"the [Topshelf] EP we are working on now is very uptempo and noisy" — which is fucking fine.

The group formed in late 2011, aiming to write pop songs with the energy and malcontent of hardcore punk, but without its entrenched masculinity — drawing influences from '60s girl groups, '80s post punk, indie pop, and shoegaze. The five-piece has since become one of the loudest — and sweetest — bands in its hometown of Baltimore.

Skip school with Post Pink. Shoplift some colorful plastic junk; detritus of western capitalism pedaled by a bigoted multinational corporate franchise. Grab all the free samples. Ride the display bikes around wal-mart until you get kicked out or have to run away. Post Pink is bad, but only in the best way. Their songs sound like the older kids in high school teaching you how to look cool when you spit, wear cat eyeliner, and make out. This Baltimore quartet is Sam Whitelaw of Crimson Wave, David Van McAleer, and both Angie Swiecicki and Emily Ferrara of Big Mouth. Post Pink is the Ferris Bueller to your Cameron Frye. Sounds like crashing some rich jerk's convertible and actually getting away with it. "I Believe You, OK" is the band's over-before-you-know-it 8 song Sister Polygon Records debut.

Cincinnati thrash-pop band Swim Team’s debut tape contains your 12 new favorite songs. It starts with “Dirty Work,” a grunge firecraker with unstoppable vocals, unapologetic lyrics, fuzzed-out guitar riffs, and a mid-song monologue that grows from a borderline deranged mumble to a ferocious catharsis. From then on, the album never stops. Feedback gives way to crunchy, headbang-inducing guitar and the drums and bass turn already-catchy tunes into straight up earworms with their relentless grooves. Singer Lillian Currens’ vocals jump from a caustic monotone to effortlessly cool croons to raw no-bullshit yelps, often seemlessly in the same track. Swim Team sounds like they could break free from your speakers at any moment, knocking you off your feet and leaving you scrambling for more.

In less than 30 minutes, the album blasts through every emotion you’ve ever buried deep inside yourself. (Hell, “Chlorine Dream”’s warped promises of love only take 23 seconds to hook you in.) “I’m Fine” and “TV” perfectly capture the growing itch of little frustrations and people you can’t stand anymore, while “Reanimator” comes to terms with falling for someone who can’t seem to muster any normal human emotion. (“I’m in love with the living dead,” yells Currens in the chorus.) Swim Team’s quieter moments, like acoustic “Everything Went Wrong” and organ-filled “Closest Thing,” lament a love that could have been. By the time you get to “Teenage Mind” — an intimate reflection on the pains of growing up, with lines like “And I’m sorry that we grew up, I’m old enough now, I’ve seen enough world to know” floating over soft guitar — all you’ll want to do is hit repeat.

Natural Velvet is Corynne Ostermann (bass, vocals), Greg Hatem (drums), Spike Arreaga (guitar) and Kim Te (guitar). The post-punk quartet is known in their native Baltimore for a distinct sound that is both aggressive and catchy. Framed by washing guitars, vocals that alternately howl and harmonize, and throbbing drum sounds, Natural Velvet creates music that moves between gazey indie pop and guttural, "wall of sound" noise rock. Aggressive bass lines throughout tie together a dark and foreboding framework, ultimately leaving the listener with haunting melody and hypnotic rhythm. At times confrontational, at times seductive, Ostermann's vocals guide the listener through dark rolling narratives of identity, existence and femininity.
Natural Velvet has played with a variety of national acts, including
Cayetana, Crocodiles, Ex Hex, Guerilla Toss, PC Worship, Thin Lips and many more, and has played festivals such as CMJ, Ladyfest Baltimore, Artscape, and Ratscape. Active in the underground music scene, the band has performed in both commercial and DIY spaces in native Baltimore and beyond. Lily Konigsberg and Horn Horse (Matt Norman) attended Bard College near Red Hook, New York, graduating in 2014 and 2016 respectively. They began collaborating on recordings in 2016 with the release of the album “Horn Horse.” Then they toured the northeastern United States and Canada in August 2016, performing music from their compilation “Lily on Horn Horse,” officially released in March 2017. Lily and Horn Horse currently operate from New York City, sleeping in a sheet rock cave at night
