There is a story told of a poor Brahman who struggles to marry due to lack of money. After begging for funds and finally marrying, he leaves to seek wealth abroad, leaving his wife and mother in his mother`s care. Soon after his departure, a ghost resembling him appears and convinces the family that he`s the Brahman returned. The ghost lives with them for years until the real Brahman returns, causing confusion. The ghost, claiming ownership of the house, tells the Brahman “I have lived here for years. And you pretend this is your house, and that woman is your wife. Your head must have got turned, Brahman.” drives the man away. The Brahman, stunned by the situation, decides to seek help from the king. However, even the king is perplexed by the identical appearance of the ghost-Brahman and the real Brahman. Despite the Brahman`s persistent pleas for justice, the king continually delays making a decision, leaving the Brahman distraught. Each day, the Brahman leaves the palace in tears, lamenting the injustice of losing his home and family to another and criticizing the king`s failure to act.
The text recounts how the Brahman, passing by herders playing at royalty, is questioned by the neat-herd king about his daily weeping. The herder king sends him to the real king, who promises to resolve his case.
In the court the next day, the neat-herd king brings a glass phial to the proceedings. The neat-herd king then addressed the spirit: “It is a simple matter that only the true Brahman may enter this phial” And to the wonder of all, the spirit made himself into a small creature like an insect, and entered into the container. The neat-herd king forthwith corked up the phial, and the ghost could not get out. Then, addressing the Brahman, the neat-herd king said, “Throw this phial into the bottom of the sea, and take possession of your house, wife, and mother.” The Brahman did so, and lived happily for many years and begat sons and daughters. Thus my story endeth, the Natiya-thorn withereth.
